To tackle global challenges such as climate change, population growth, and food crises, research and development (R&D) is essential for building a resilient agricultural industry and sustainable food systems. Recognizing this, PT East West Seed Indonesia (EWINDO) is strengthening its R&D efforts. The horticultural seed company, known for its Cap Panah Merah brand, will inaugurate a new research facility in Purwakarta in May 2025. Managing Director Glenn Pardede emphasized that innovation and technology are key to addressing issues like unpredictable growing seasons, pest and disease outbreaks, and land conversion. As part of EWINDO’s 35th anniversary, the facility will feature advanced laboratories in biomolecular, biosciences, plant pathology, biochemistry, and bioinformatics to accelerate the development of disease-resistant, climate-adaptive, and high-nutrient vegetable varieties.
Additionally, EWINDO is enhancing farmer capacity through eight Learning Farms across key horticulture regions, promoting sustainable farming practices and knowledge sharing. The company also continues to develop the SIPINDO mobile app, offering farmers market price information to help guide planting decisions. Glenn expressed optimism that continuous innovation will improve farmers' welfare and solidify EWINDO’s role as a trusted partner to growers. Despite industry headwinds like weakened purchasing power and falling commodity prices, Commercial Director Ganesh Pamugar Satyagraha remains confident in positive business growth for 2025, even if below double digits. As of 2024, EWINDO has partnered with 17,000 seed producers, 35,000 pollinators, and supports over 2.2 million horticulture farmers across Indonesia in achieving prosperous harvests.
