The Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is intensifying fishery exports to South Korea by expanding the number of certified fish processing units (UPIs) eligible to export. This follows approval from South Korea’s National Fishery Products Quality Management Service (NFQS), a result of sustained negotiations and bilateral cooperation. According to KKP’s Head of Quality Control and Fishery Product Safety, Ishartini, the agreement allows Indonesia to conduct pre-border inspections, streamlining the export process and reducing customs clearance times. Currently, 660 UPIs across Indonesia are authorized to export to Korea. The partnership is part of a broader agreement titled the Arrangement on the Cooperation in Quality Control and Hygiene Safety of Import and Export Fish and Fishery Products, which aligns both countries' quality standards and strengthens mutual trade benefits.
More broadly, KKP recorded IDR 1 trillion in fishery exports between March 24 and April 2, 2025, during the Eid al-Fitr holiday period. Over 20,000 tons of seafood were exported from 32 provinces, showing Indonesia’s resilience in maintaining international trade despite public holidays. Major export commodities include shrimp, tuna, squid, octopus, crab, and seaweed, with products reaching destinations such as South Korea, the U.S., China, Japan, Australia, the UAE, and over 25 other countries. Ishartini emphasized that seamless communication and quality assurance across the supply chain have ensured smooth operations globally. The efforts reflect Indonesia’s growing capacity to meet international standards and strengthen its global position in the fishery sector.
