US President Donald Trump's reciprocal import tariffs have affected a number of European countries, including France. Responding to this, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and French President Emmanuel Macron agreed to maintain strong economic and trade cooperation. Both expressed their commitment to maintaining good relations in a telephone conversation, Friday night (4/4/2025), two days after United States President Donald Trump announced his latest import tariff policy. President Prabowo, on his official social media account @prabowo in Jakarta, Saturday (5/4/2025), assessed that the strategic cooperation between Indonesia and France not only reflects the national interests of each country, but also contributes to the stability and prosperity of the region and the world.
"In discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron, we agreed to continue to encourage inclusive and sustainable economic development for the welfare of the people," said President Prabowo as quoted by Antaranews. Prabowo then welcomed France's commitment to increasing a strong and visionary bilateral partnership between the two countries. "Let us strengthen synergy and build a future for mutual progress," Prabowo continued. On a separate occasion, President Macron shared the contents of his meeting with Prabowo in Indonesian. "We have decided to strengthen the relationship between our countries with ambitious and forward-looking projects. This historic approach that we are preparing will be realized in my state visit to Indonesia at the end of May," said President Macron. Macron continued that he and President Prabowo agreed to strengthen cooperation in the fields of defense, economy, science and culture, as well as expand the scope of cooperation in the field of education. Macron also mentioned several priority cooperation between France and the European Union with Indonesia, including creating a resilient value chain, especially in the critical metals sector, and supporting the energy transition from fossil fuels to new and renewable energy (EBT).
