Indonesia Expands Seafood Export Access to Korea with 11 New Processing Units

The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) of Indonesia has successfully expanded access to the South Korean seafood market, with 11 additional Fish Processing Units (UPI) approved for export, bringing the total to 660 units. This achievement stems from strengthened trade cooperation and consistent alignment with international food safety and quality standards. The approval follows a bilateral agreement with Korea under the Arrangement on the Cooperation in Quality Control and Hygiene Safety of Import and Export Fish and Fishery Products, ensuring mutual recognition of quality systems between the two nations.

Head of the Fishery Product Quality Control Agency at KKP, Ishartini, highlighted that this milestone is the result of persistent negotiations and close collaboration with Korean authorities. The joint inspection conducted in August 2024 by both countries paved the way for the newly approved companies, including PT Indo American Seafoods Tbk and PT Perikanan Indonesia, to begin exporting as of April 2, 2025. Ishartini noted that with this agreement, Indonesia can now conduct pre-border inspections, reducing port processing times and enabling rapid responses to regulatory changes. This progress not only boosts export potential but also reinforces Indonesia’s commitment to producing high-quality, sustainable seafood. With nine certifications managed by KKP’s quality body, the country aims to minimize product rejections and maintain consumer trust in global markets. Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono emphasized the need for end-to-end quality assurance to protect aquatic biodiversity and ensure safe, microplastic-free fish products for consumers.
