On 26 March, the Indonesia Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) Head Taruna Ikrar and Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in drug and food control to improve the safety, quality, nutrition and competitiveness of agricultural products, including fresh or processed food products, horticulture, plantations and/or livestock in agro-ecosystems. The MoU also aims to strengthen the integrity of the drug and medicine supply chain, control antimicrobial resistance in human and animal health, and enhance the capacity of business actors in the sector. The potential for the development of Indonesia's herbal medicines reaches IDR 300 trillion annually. The cooperation between BPOM and the Ministry of Agriculture is a great opportunity for the Indonesian people, in line with the "1 village 1 cooperative" programme, where each cooperative has a pharmacy. Thus, synergy and socialisation of BPOM regulations, policies and monitoring standards are needed to ensure the supply of nutritious food, standardised herbal medicines and also safe cosmetics circulating in the community. The development of Indonesian herbal medicine production is expected to be competitive and accessible to the public at a more affordable price, with guaranteed quality and efficacy. Thus, it is expected to improve the economy at the same time.
