On 26 March 2025, the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sugiono, welcomed the visit of the French Minister of European and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office in Central Jakarta. This visit is a significant development in the relationship between the two nations, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and Indonesia. The meeting's agenda encompassed collaboration opportunities in economic and security matters. By 2024, the total value of French investments in Indonesia is expected to reach USD 328 million and IDR 5.3 trillion, reflecting a positive trend. Sugiono emphasised the potential for French investment in Indonesia, highlighting areas such as renewable energy, critical minerals, creative economy, logistics, transportation, and green infrastructure. Both countries agreed to strengthen cooperation in creating a digital economy ecosystem, including training programs.
Barrot reaffirmed France's dedication to strengthening cooperation with Indonesia in the maritime sector, including the protection of the oceans and the security of the Indo-Pacific region. On global governance and maritime matters, the two countries favour dialogue and multilateralism to address global challenges rather than confrontational approaches. Sugiono and Barrot will meet at the third Ocean Protection Conference to strengthen cooperation on global governance and maritime issues. On the subject of education, Barrot announced the signing of a cooperation agreement with the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education Agency (LPDP), enabling master's and doctoral education at French universities for Indonesian students. An agreement has also been signed between the EU and France for a maritime security project in the Indo-Pacific region, to support the security and safety of Indonesian ports, as well as enhance the security of shipping and trade in the region. This cooperation is expected to reinforce the strategic partnership between Indonesia and France, thereby contributing to the economic growth of the Indo-Pacific region.
