The Papua Highlands Provincial Government is actively fostering economic growth by hosting more sporting events. Acting Governor Velix V. Wanggai highlighted that sports activities, such as the recent Liga 4 tournament, provide opportunities for local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to thrive. The event at Pendidikan Stadium in Wamena, which accommodates up to 15,000 spectators, became a bustling marketplace where local vendors sold products like betel nuts, grilled corn, and other snacks to enthusiastic football fans.
Wanggai emphasized that supporting such events aligns with the vision of economic sovereignty, empowering local communities while promoting regional identity. He encouraged frequent sports and cultural activities to not only showcase the area’s potential but also stimulate economic circulation. However, he stressed that maintaining public order and security is crucial for sustaining these initiatives. The governor also called on the younger generation to contribute to a peaceful environment, ensuring that similar events continue to drive local economic prosperity.
