The Indonesian government has approved the import of 200,000 tons of raw sugar as part of its national food reserves. Minister of Trade Budi Santoso confirmed that import permits have been issued, with India, Brazil, and Latin American countries being the primary suppliers. However, he did not specify the quota for each country. The import process is currently underway, with authorities monitoring its progress to ensure smooth entry into Indonesia.
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Zulkifli Hasan stated that sugar imports will continue this year based on President Prabowo Subianto’s directive. While imports of other commodities like rice, corn, and salt have been restricted, sugar remains an exception to support industrial needs. The government is also focusing on improving irrigation and agricultural infrastructure to reduce dependency on imports in the future.
