President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated a precious metal refinery (PMR) operated by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), marking a significant milestone in Indonesia’s mineral downstream industry. With the world’s sixth-largest gold reserves, Indonesia now has the capability to process its own minerals, transforming previously exported raw materials into high-value refined gold and silver. Located in the Gresik Special Economic Zone (KEK), the facility utilizes hydrometallurgy technology to produce internationally certified pure metals, strengthening Indonesia’s self-sufficiency in precious metal processing.
The PMR PTFI is expected to provide substantial economic benefits, including job creation, increased local revenue, and a stronger domestic supply chain. By collaborating with PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (ANTAM), the project enhances Indonesia’s industrial competitiveness while supporting both domestic demand and exports. The government’s support positions KEK Gresik as a global hub for precious metal refining, attracting foreign investment and reinforcing Indonesia’s standing in the international market. Additionally, the facility is designed with eco-friendly technology, aligning with the nation’s commitment to sustainable industrial growth.
