Encouraging Sheep and Goat Exports, Ministry of Agriculture Tightens Standards

The Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) is intensifying efforts to protect local livestock farmers and enhance the competitiveness of the national livestock subsector. This initiative follows a temporary suspension of carcass and adult sheep meat (mutton) imports to prevent unhealthy price competition. After conducting a series of meetings with farmers and importers, Kementan is now focusing on increasing the absorption of local meat and accelerating export access. Agung Suganda, Director General of Livestock and Animal Health at Kementan, stated that the availability of goat and sheep meat must meet export standards, including compliance with the Veterinary Control Number (NKV). This is a primary requirement for Indonesian livestock products to be accepted in global markets. Additionally, efforts to boost domestic market absorption of sheep meat are ongoing to maintain price stability.

Yudi Guntara, Chairman of HPDKI, revealed that the demand for goat and sheep meat, particularly in Middle Eastern markets, continues to show a positive trend. This demand is not only for daily consumption but also for religious purposes, which is a significant factor in driving Indonesian goat and sheep meat exports. The meeting also discussed steps to fulfill the NKV, an essential requirement in livestock product exports. Moving forward, synergy between the government and livestock industry players will be strengthened to position Indonesia as a major player in the international goat and sheep meat market.
