Jakarta Becomes A Pioneer In Organizing Carbon Economic Value In Indonesia

The Jakarta Provincial Government has become a pioneer in implementing Carbon Economic Value (NEK) in Indonesia, backed by a long-term plan. Head of the Jakarta Environmental Agency, Asep Kuswanto, emphasized the city's commitment to collaborating with various stakeholders, including the central government and private sector, to ensure the readiness of infrastructure and regulations for NEK implementation. Jakarta faces significant challenges in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly in the transportation, industrial, and energy sectors. To address this, the city has established the NEK Performance Implementation Team under Governor's Decree No. 28 of 2025, responsible for policy formulation and execution. Additionally, Jakarta has developed a roadmap outlining sector priorities, feasibility analysis, and governance strategies to support NEK initiatives.

Deputy for Climate Change Control and Carbon Economic Governance at the Ministry of Environment, Ary Sudijanto, praised Jakarta's proactive approach in establishing long-term policies, including Regional Low-Carbon Development Regulations. He highlighted Jakarta's strategic role as Indonesia’s capital and economic hub in achieving national climate mitigation targets. The adoption of NEK within the carbon trading framework is seen as a crucial step toward sustainable urban growth and meeting the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and Net Zero Emission (NZE) targets by 2050. Indonesia’s carbon market has progressed significantly, with the first international carbon trade launched on January 20, 2025, through IDXCarbon. Since its inception in September 2023, total carbon trading in Indonesia has reached Rp58.86 billion, with a volume of 1.13 million tons of CO₂ equivalent.
