The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has secured support from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to develop Indonesia’s seaweed and shrimp industries. This collaboration is part of the second phase of the Global Quality and Standards Programme (GQSP) Indonesia, a USD 2.2 million project running until next year. Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono emphasized that this initiative aims to enhance the quality and competitiveness of national seaweed and shrimp production, building on existing cultivation models in Wakatobi and Kebumen. The project will strengthen value chains, improve economic contributions, and promote climate resilience in Indonesia’s fisheries sector.
The program is being implemented in key seaweed and shrimp-producing regions, including Takalar, Jeneponto, Wakatobi, Surabaya, Tarakan, and Lampung Selatan. Additionally, it supports national priorities such as food self-sufficiency, downstream fisheries development, and nutrition enhancement. UNIDO, which has collaborated with KKP since 2014, previously worked on the SMART-Fish project and the first phase of GQSP. Deputy to the Director General of UNIDO, Ciyong Zou, praised the decade-long partnership, highlighting its role in boosting economic growth and environmental sustainability. The meeting also covered discussions on satellite-based monitoring, eco-friendly fishing ports, and advancing marine education, training, and research.
