The export of white ginger from Simalungun continues to grow, driven by increasing global awareness of its health benefits. With high-quality production and strategic marketing, Simalungun is poised to become a leading hub for premium white ginger. In 2024, Simalungun Regent Radiapoh Hasiholan Sinaga attended the shipment ceremony of white ginger to Dubai, marking a milestone in the region’s agricultural exports. According to local officials, a recent shipment of approximately 30 tons was sent in a single container to Dubai, showcasing the strong demand for this commodity.
Simalungun's white ginger, known for its large rhizomes and distinct spiciness, has gained international recognition, reaching markets in the U.S., India, and several European countries. With hundreds of farming groups cultivating the crop, production remains strong. At the North Sumatra Innovation and Investment Week, white ginger exports were valued at IDR 3 billion, with additional private export agreements expanding its global reach. By April 2024, Simalungun produced 1,275 tons of white ginger across 418,230 square meters of farmland, achieving a productivity rate of 3.05 kilograms per square meter. With ongoing government support and rising demand, Simalungun’s white ginger industry is set for further international expansion.
