Barantin Certifies Indonesia’s Coconut Exports to Over 100 Countries

Indonesia's coconut exports reached over 100 countries in 2024, totaling 1.09 million tons, according to Indonesia's Quarantine Agency (Barantin). Deputy for Plant Quarantine, Bambang, highlighted that major export destinations include China, Malaysia, Thailand, India, Australia, the U.S., Vietnam, and Germany. While export volumes fluctuate annually due to factors like pricing and production levels, Indonesia continues to lead in global coconut trade. In 2023, the highest export volume recorded was 1.45 million tons, supported by a 0.8% production increase.

Indonesia exports 22 types of coconut-based products, including whole coconuts, coconut oil, coconut milk, and coconut sugar, without requiring bilateral trade agreements. Although China initially requested an export protocol for coconut products in 2022, Barantin negotiated for minimal regulations, ensuring that only fresh young coconuts required specific compliance. This decision eased export conditions for Indonesian farmers, most of whom operate small-scale plantations. Bambang emphasized that trade protocols are not always necessary for agricultural exports and encouraged stakeholders to enhance downstream processing to maximize economic benefits.
