Boosting Food Self-Sufficiency, 40 Thousand Hectares of Land in North Maluku to be Opened

North Maluku Governor Sherly Tjoanda said that her party will work together with the Minister of Agriculture (Mentan) Andi Amran Sulaiman to accelerate food self-sufficiency in North Maluku Province. One of the programs that the two will work on is to create livestock farms and rejuvenate dozens of hectares of existing gardens. "Earlier we discussed the potential of North Maluku for food self-sufficiency. Especially for livestock that we don't have yet and plantations," said Sherly when met at the Ministry of Agriculture Office, Jakarta, Monday, March 3rd, 2025. Sherly said that there are around 30 to 40 thousand hectares of new land that will be used for livestock farms. With this program, Sherly hopes that the province's meat needs can be met without importing. Furthermore, Sherly said that her party and the Ministry of Agriculture will also rejuvenate a number of plantation areas currently in Maluku, such as cloves, corn, and coconut. Not only that, there will also be new land used specifically for corn and rice commodities.

According to her, this plan will be realized as soon as possible after Eid. "As soon as possible, after Eid, hopefully the data will be complete and we can implement it immediately." Previously, Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman said that he would open 3 million rice fields and build modern agricultural clusters. He said that the modern agricultural clusters were carried out to accelerate food self-sufficiency. This modern agricultural cluster program will be implemented in 12 provinces. "This is the biggest. This collaboration will be a permanent solution for agriculture in the future," he said. Amran claims that this modern agricultural cluster program will increase the contribution of agriculture to the overall gross domestic product by 30 to 40 times the existing money circulation. Currently, he explained, the money circulation from upstream to downstream or central to regional reaches IDR 1,300 trillion.
