The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLH), in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry and Bappenas, has identified seven potential business sectors emerging from the closure of 343 open dumping landfills across Indonesia. This transition to an integrated waste management system is projected to generate IDR 127.5 trillion annually while offering significant environmental and economic benefits.
The key business opportunities include recycling industries (IDR 42.3 trillion/year), compost and organic fertilizer production (IDR 18.7 trillion/year), waste-to-energy plants (IDR 26.5 trillion/year), refuse-derived fuel (IDR 13.8 trillion/year), urban mining for valuable metals (IDR 9.7 trillion/year), digital waste-sharing platforms (IDR 7.2 trillion/year), and waste management consulting services (IDR 9.3 trillion/year). Additionally, 12 sustainable business models have been identified for MSMEs, cooperatives, and startups, with investment needs ranging from IDR 250 million to IDR 5 billion. This initiative is expected to boost circular economy implementation and create new job opportunities nationwide.
