Indonesia Has Great Potential to Become a CCS Development Hub in Asia

To discuss regulations, technological advancements, and investment optimization in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) for sustainable energy transition, the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs held a workshop titled "Opportunities and Challenges in Implementing Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in Indonesia." Deputy for Energy and Mineral Resources Coordination, Elen Setiadi, emphasized that Indonesia’s economic growth target of 8% must align with environmental responsibility. He highlighted Indonesia’s vast geological storage capacity, positioning the country as a potential CCS hub in Asia.

The workshop covered key aspects of CCS implementation, including cross-border operations with Singapore, regulatory frameworks, and investment models. Discussions also addressed carbon tax schemes, risk management, and funding mechanisms to accelerate CCS projects. The government underscored the need for stakeholder synergy to ensure CCS contributes to Indonesia’s energy transition and economic growth. Additionally, CCS is seen as a driver of economic value by leveraging Indonesia’s geological resources to attract foreign and domestic investment. Moving forward, the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources will develop a CCS-Cross Border Roadmap to enhance competitiveness and market readiness.
