The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) together with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) are collaborating to maintain the sustainability of upstream-downstream fishery products, in order to ensure the preservation of natural resources and improve the quality and sustainability of the fisheries industry in Indonesia. "KKP ensures the sustainability of fish resources (SDI) from upstream to downstream. Together with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), KKP is targeting increasing awareness of producers and consumers regarding the importance of SDI sustainability," said Director General of Strengthening the Competitiveness of Marine and Fishery Products (PDSPKP) KKP Budi Sulistiyo in a statement in Jakarta. He said that the collaboration between KKP and WWF has been established over the past five years and has been achieved such as five Fish Processing Units (UPI) that have successfully obtained international certification from the Aquaculture Stewardship Council.
Budi said that certified Indonesian fishery products will make it easier to access a wider international market and the prices will be more competitive. "ASC is an international standard for sustainable aquaculture," explained Budi. Not only that, the collaboration between the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) and WWF also encourages consumer awareness of sustainable seafood products. This is indicated by a survey that 40 % of consumers are now more concerned with the origin of seafood, and 50 % of consumers buy seafood only from sources that implement sustainable management. "This joint campaign has generated more than 10 thousand engagements on social media and involved 1,700 users of the seafood advisor application," explained Budi. The collaboration between the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (WWF) also strengthens the fisheries business network with 34 business meetings involving modern retail buyers.
