The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) invites koi fish breeders to improve the quality of their cultivation products in order to expand the export market. The Director General (Dirjen) of Aquaculture of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Tb Haeru Rahayu, at the Indonesia Japan Koi Show 2025 event in Cibinong, West Java, Wednesday (2/19/2025), emphasized the importance of this in supporting the progress of the Indonesian koi fish industry. "We continue to strive to advance the Indonesian koi fish industry and make Indonesia the world's ornamental fish champion. Indonesia has become the second largest ornamental fish exporter, replacing Singapore and the Netherlands," said Tb Haeru.
The Indonesia Japan Koi Show 2025 event also presents the first Indonesia Koi Breeder Contest, which encourages koi fish breeders to produce superior koi types at fantastic prices. The three types of koi that are the favorites are Kohaku, Sanke, and Showa, which are estimated to have a selling value of up to billions of rupiah. In the event, as many as 1,626 koi fish from 409 owners from various regions of Indonesia were also exhibited. Tb Haeru hopes collaboration between all parties to improve the genetic quality of Indonesian koi fish. According to International Trade Statistics data, Indonesia's ornamental fish exports in 2023 were recorded at USD 39.06 million or around 11.1% of the world's total ornamental fish exports, which were worth USD 351.89 million. Freshwater ornamental fish dominate exports, with a portion of 81.4%, where koi fish are one of the most in demand. Meanwhile, the Minister of Economy and Development of the Japanese Embassy in Indonesia, Hajime Ueda, expressed his pride in the development of koi fish farming in Indonesia. In addition, the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries is also preparing facilities such as the Ornamental Fish Raiser in Cibinong, West Java, to support the progress of this sector.
