Indonesia Urged to Strengthen Cybersecurity as Data Industry Surges to USD 274 Billion

The global data industry is projected to reach USD 274 billion, highlighting the urgent need for Indonesia to enhance cybersecurity and protect personal data. Experts, including ICT Executive Director Heru Sutadi and ITB telecommunications analyst Ian Joseph Matheus Edward, stress the importance of strengthening regulations and enforcing stricter data protection measures. With Indonesia ranking 14th globally for data breaches, affecting an estimated 160 million accounts in the past two decades, concerns over security are rising. The government is encouraged to accelerate the implementation of the Personal Data Protection Law and establish a dedicated regulatory body to oversee data governance.

Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid emphasized the growing significance of data security, particularly with the increasing adoption of fintech services. The government is expected to conduct thorough audits of applications, platforms, and data centers to prevent unauthorized access and mitigate potential cyber threats. Strengthening Indonesia’s digital infrastructure and ensuring compliance with existing data protection laws will be key to maintaining the country’s competitiveness in the rapidly expanding global data economy.
