Indonesia’s cocoa industry plays a strategic role in the national economy but faces significant challenges, as production has been declining since 2010. Factors such as low-quality seedlings, pest attacks, extreme climate change, and land conversion are primary causes of the decreasing productivity of national cocoa.
In response, the Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Center (Puslitkoka) and PT Perkebunan Nusantara I (PTPN I) launched the Cocoa Center of Excellence at Kebun Kendenglembu in Banyuwangi. This initiative is part of the expanded mandate of the Coffee Nusantara Project Management Office (PMO) assigned by the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises, Erick Thohir, to support the development of national cocoa. The center will focus on research, training, and the development of productive and sustainable cocoa cultivation technologies, including superior variety development, improving farmer capacity, industry partnership strengthening, and technological research and innovation. The Kebun Kendenglembu, covering 220.3 hectares, applies regenerative agriculture practices and remains committed to enhancing high-quality cocoa production in Indonesia.
