On 12th February 2025, the Coordinating Ministry for Food held a limited coordination meeting to discuss the government's latest decisions on beef imports. The government has decided to reallocate the beef import quota from 80,000 to 180,000 tonnes, returning it to private sector businesses. This decision follows concerns raised by private sector businesses regarding the allocation of the beef import quota to PT Berdikari and PT Perusahaan Perdagangan Indonesia (PPI), both part of the ID Food State-Owned Enterprise (SOE) holding. In conjunction with the reallocation of the beef import quota, the government will recalculate the import allocation for private sector business.
The import allocation for private sector business is set at 180,000 tonnes, and the government will continue to implement the criteria of import realization above 60% for businesses seeking the quota. Further details on the allocation will be discussed in the near future, and the official decision to return the quota will be made during the upcoming limited coordination meeting. According to the government, the purpose of the import quota transfer is to facilitate stock and price monitoring. However, businesses have expressed concerns regarding this reasoning, as food SOEs have not distributed meat directly to date, but rather through private distributors.
