Slamet Prayoga (Yoga), founder of the Coffee Farmers Community (Kanopi) in East Kalimantan, explains that Liberica coffee was introduced in 1977 through the transmigration program in Sepaku District, significantly contributing to its spread across the region. Today, Liberica is found in all districts of East Kalimantan, with growing popularity in both local and international markets. Key factors supporting its success include its unique aroma and taste, resistance to pests and diseases, and ability to thrive in East Kalimantan's lowland and sandy soils, requiring minimal maintenance. Furthermore, the region's vast land and agroforestry systems offer an ideal environment for its cultivation, while the presence of IKN Nusantara opens new market opportunities.
Despite its potential, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and limited knowledge about cultivation and marketing persist. However, with ongoing government support and community efforts, the development of Liberica coffee could significantly contribute to East Kalimantan's economic growth and sustainability. Collaboration between local farmers, businesses, and stakeholders is essential to promoting Liberica coffee as a key regional product and investment for the future.
