To strengthen Indonesia’s economic sovereignty and maximize the added value of mineral and coal commodities, MIND ID, Indonesia’s state-owned mining holding company, is advancing integrated downstreaming initiatives. These strategic projects ensure a complete supply chain from upstream to downstream, keeping mineral processing within the country and boosting Indonesia’s global standing. According to Heri Yusuf, MIND ID’s Corporate Secretary, this approach enhances economic impact and secures Indonesia’s role in the global supply chain. Among its key projects is the Smelter Grade Alumina Refinery (SGAR) in Mempawah, West Kalimantan, managed by PT Borneo Alumina Indonesia. With a 1-million-ton alumina output annually, it significantly reduces reliance on imported raw materials for INALUM’s aluminum production.
Additionally, MIND ID’s subsidiary, PT Freeport Indonesia, is constructing a copper smelter and a Precious Metal Refinery (PMR) in Gresik, East Java, processing copper ore into cathodes and refining anode sludge into gold, silver, and Platinum Group Metals (PGM). Further, its nickel downstreaming project in East Halmahera features a Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace (RKEF) smelter and High-Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) facilities to produce battery-grade nickel for electric vehicles (EVs). These projects enhance Indonesia’s competitiveness in the global EV industry while promoting high-value local production. MIND ID remains committed to integrating the mineral and coal supply chain, contributing to Indonesia’s long-term economic growth target of 8%.
