According to Bank Indonesia's Consumer Survey, the Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) stood at 127.2 in January 2025, slightly lower than December 2024’s 127.7. However, the Consumer Expectations Index (CEI) increased from 139.5 to 140.8, indicating growing optimism about economic conditions in the next six months, particularly regarding income and business activities. The survey also highlighted an increase in income expectations, rising from 143.3 in December to 144.8 in January. Meanwhile, the Current Economic Condition Index (CECI) declined slightly from 116.0 to 113.5, mainly due to a drop in job availability from 112.2 to 107.7. Despite this, the income index remained strong at 122.6.
Consumer confidence was highest among those with monthly spending of IDR 4.1 – 5 million (131.8), followed by those spending above IDR 5 million (131.0). Young consumers aged 20-30 showed the highest optimism, with an index of 133.5. Several cities saw a significant increase in CCI, with Banjarmasin leading (+17.0 points), followed by Medan (+8.5 points) and Mataram (+8.0 points). While the ratio of consumption to income slightly declined to 73.6%, debt repayment allocation increased from 10.5% to 11.1%. With strengthening economic expectations, Bank Indonesia notes that consumer optimism will play a crucial role in sustaining economic growth amid global uncertainties.
