Cement exports in the previous year increased by double digits compared to the previous year. Despite the ongoing global economic downturn, particularly in some key export markets such as Bangladesh, Australia, and Taiwan, this did not lead to a decline in cement purchases from Indonesia. By the end of 2024, total cement and clinker exports grew by 10.4%, reaching a total volume of 11.9 million tons. This growth was driven by sustained demand for clinker in traditional overseas markets. The Chairman of the Indonesian Cement Association (ASI), Lilik Unggul Raharjo, explained that the installed capacity of the national cement industry stands at 119.9 million tons per year. "Domestic cement sales in 2024 totaled 64.9 million tons, a decrease of 0.9% compared to 65.5 million tons in 2023, while cement exports increased by 10.4% to 11.9 million tons," Lilik said in a press statement in Jakarta on Friday (31/1/2025).
ASI observed that the decline in domestic cement sales was due to weakened purchasing power, with demand in the construction sector slowing down as cement demand remained flat for government projects both in Java and other regions, such as the development of the new capital city in East Kalimantan. Some of the main cement markets, such as Java, saw a slight decline of 0.1% this year, with a volume of 33.5 million tons, almost the same as in 2023. Sales in Kalimantan grew by 11.2% in 2024, although this was lower than the 22.1% growth in 2023, due to a slowdown in development as the government reduced its budget for infrastructure projects in the new capital city. Cement sales in Bali and Nusa Tenggara saw a 3.3% growth compared to 2023, with Bali's cement sales growing by 15.8%, mainly due to several ongoing tourism-related projects. Conditions in other regions, such as Sumatra, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua, were relatively similar, with most regions experiencing a decline in sales.
