The Central Sulawesi Provincial Government (Sulteng) has announced that durian exports to China will be in the form of frozen durian and durian paste, in line with the destination country’s demand. "Chinese consumers prefer packaged durian, meaning it's ready to eat right away," said Nelson Metubun, Head of the Department of Food Crops and Horticulture (TPH) of Sulteng, in Palu on Sunday. He explained that the first export to China is scheduled for February 2025, and before the shipments take place, the Indonesian government will conduct a simulation to ensure the smooth export process. The simulation will involve multiple ministries, agencies, the Sulteng provincial government, and the exporting companies.

Nelson highlighted that frozen durian and paste must meet the destination country's protocols, which is why packaging facilities must maintain high fruit quality standards. He noted that the Chinese market is highly stringent regarding product quality, requiring compliance with standards such as Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Good Handling Practices (GHP). Several durian varieties, including Montong, Musangking, Duri Hitam, and Bawor, are ready for export based on market demand. The fruit will be shipped at an 80-90% ripeness level, with an estimated travel time of about nine days. To support the export, around 3,056 hectares of durian farms and 1,379 registered durian farmers in Sulteng are ready to meet the export protocols. According to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Sulteng produces an average of 433,189 tons of fresh durian annually, from a total of 1.2 million fruit-bearing trees across 13 regencies and cities. Parigi Moutong, Poso, and Sigi regencies are among the five regions in Sulteng ready for export, with ongoing studies for the export protocol for fresh durian.
