The Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Agency (BKHIT) of Maluku has announced that octopus and anchovy (ikan kayu) have become new export products from the region to the global market. "In 2024, there are new commodities from Maluku being exported abroad, namely octopus and anchovy," said Abdur Rohman, Head of BKHIT Maluku, when contacted from Ambon on Tuesday. These commodities are being shipped by Maluku’s first Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) that have succeeded in penetrating foreign markets, Celebes Ocean Fisheries and UD Rizky Fattah Katsuo Maluku Barokah.
Octopus, in particular, has become one of Indonesia’s leading export products due to its high production and competitive value in international markets like Japan, China, South Korea, the United States, and Europe. To ensure quality and health standards, all exports of octopus and anchovies must pass through BKHIT Maluku for inspection, packaging, and compliance with regulations. The total value of Maluku’s fishery exports from January to December 2024 amounted to IDR 759 billion, a 21.64% decrease compared to the same period in 2023. Nonetheless, Maluku's fisheries were exported to 11 countries, with China, Vietnam, Japan, the USA, and Ghana being the top destinations. The Maluku Quarantine Agency also facilitates export trade by providing health certification and 24/7 services to ensure smooth export operations.
