The Indonesian government is actively working to accelerate the country’s digital economy to boost its competitiveness both regionally and globally. Collaborative efforts with various stakeholders are focused on building robust digital infrastructure, optimizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) use, developing a skilled workforce, and enhancing digital security. At the same time, the government is pushing for the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) to maximize Indonesia’s digital economy potential within the region. Minister Airlangga Hartarto highlighted that AI is being utilized in sectors like manufacturing, healthcare, and blockchain, and stressed that quantum leaps in digitalization and AI are essential for achieving non-linear growth, with a target of 8% economic growth as set by President Prabowo.
Globally, AI is expected to contribute USD 15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030, with a significant portion coming from productivity gains and consumption. Indonesia is focusing on AI as a key driver of economic resilience and is positioning itself as a regional leader in AI development and data centers. Minister Airlangga also emphasized the need for supporting infrastructure, such as data centers and semiconductor development, while noting Indonesia's progress in completing the AI readiness assessment by UNESCO. The government is committed to producing 500,000 digitally literate youth annually, including AI specialists, and continues to strengthen collaborations with global partners like Alibaba Cloud to foster innovation and digital talent. Furthermore, the government is deeply committed to ensuring robust digital security, which Minister Airlangga described as essential for the sustainable growth of the digital economy.
