26 New PLN Power Plants Officially Operate, Investment Reaches IDR 72 Trillion

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia reported that 26 new power plants have officially started operating, with a total investment reaching IDR 72 trillion. The inauguration was carried out simultaneously on Monday, 20th January 2025 at the Jatigede Hydroelectric Power Plant, Sumedang, West Java. This strategic step was taken to pursue the target of a new and renewable energy (EBT) mix of 23% by 2025. Currently, the national electricity capacity has reached 101 gigawatts (GW), with PLN managing around 72-75 GW. However, the EBT mix, which is recorded at only 15-16%, is a significant challenge. The planning target in 2025 should actually reach 23%, meaning it still has a deficit of approximately 8,000 megawatts or 8 gigawatts. But with the existing conditions, it will be able to achieve the target.

Together with President Prabowo Subianto and President Director of PT. PLN (Persero) Darmawan Prasodjo, 11 electricity infrastructures were also inaugurated, including 10 transmission networks and one substation. These projects include transmission along 739.7 circuit kilometers (kms) and a substation with a capacity of 1,740 megavolt ampere (MVA).
In addition, it also inaugurated a power plant with a capacity of 3.2 gigawatts, and 11 substation transmission network projects. This project supplies electricity from new power plants. PLN President Director, Darmawan Prasodjo added that the operation of this new power plant not only increases national electricity capacity but also supports efforts to reduce carbon emissions. This is a very large portion based on clean energy as part of the energy transition. With the entry of this power plant, the reduction in carbon emissions reaches 14 million tons per year compared to business as usual.
