Boost Productivity, Ministry of Industry Strengthens Collaboration with Cocoa Industry Stakeholders

The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) is focusing on improving Indonesia’s cocoa industry productivity by enhancing collaboration among stakeholders across the supply chain. Putu Juli Ardika, Director General of Agro Industry at Kemenperin, highlighted the productivity challenges during the National Workshop on "Cocoa Value Chain Transformation" in Jakarta on January 15, 2025. Kemenperin has partnered with the Cocoa and Coconut Plantation Fund Management Agency (BPDP) and the Ministry of Forestry to optimize the sector. BPDP's involvement, especially amid rising global cocoa prices, is expected to support Indonesia’s cocoa growth, while the Ministry of Forestry is exploring the use of Sustainable Production Forest Land (HPL) for cocoa cultivation.

Despite challenges like declining cocoa bean availability, which has reduced Indonesia's ranking from the 4th to 7th largest global producer, Indonesia remains the world’s 4th largest exporter of processed cocoa products. In 2023, cocoa exports were valued at over USD 1.2 billion, representing a 3.92% share of the global market. Additionally, the artisan bean-to-bar chocolate industry in Indonesia has shown promising growth, with the number of producers rising from 15 in 2023 to 47 in 2024. Kemenperin has also initiated the Cocoa Doctor program to train individuals who support local farmers, aiming to achieve cocoa self-sufficiency and strengthen Indonesia’s cocoa industry in the global market.
