Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based clean energy company Masdar said that Indonesia is the renewable energy hub in the Southeast Asia region. "Jakarta is our hub for Southeast Asia. In Jakarta, we decided to build our office," Masdar Chief Operating Officer (COO) Abdulaziz Alobaidli told ANTARA when met in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Although Masdar is targeting investment expansion to countries around Indonesia, Alobaidli said that Indonesia remains the renewable energy hub in the Southeast Asia region. Masdar is also targeting Malaysia, then the potential for (energy) exports to Singapore, the Philippines, and other markets. What is certain is that Masdar is starting in Indonesia, and Jakarta is Masdar regional hub for the region.
Masdar is involved in various renewable energy projects in Indonesia, one of which is the development of the Cirata Floating Solar Power Plant (PLTS) project, in the Cirata Reservoir, West Java. In addition, Masdar also received a Letter to Proceed (LtP) in the Government Cooperation with Business Entities (KPBU) investment for renewable energy in Nusantara, East Kalimantan, from the Indonesian Capital Authority (OIKN). Masdar also holds a 15 % stake in PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE). Currently, Masdar is conducting a feasibility study for wind power plants (PLTB) and the potential for developing hydroelectric power plants (PLTA) with a pumped storage system or pumping water to a higher reservoir when there is excess electricity. For wind power, Alobaidli expressed that it is quite difficult to develop in Indonesia. The topography of the area makes some projects unfeasible, but we are still exploring the opportunities. For pumped storage, the feasibility study is still ongoing.
