The Financial Services Authority (OJK) of South Sumatra together with the South Sumatra government will export coffee from South Sumatra to Malaysia. This is done so that South Sumatra coffee is better known abroad. Head of South Sumatra Babel OJK, Arifin Susanto expressed that on January 20, 2025 OJK together with the South Sumatra Provincial Government will export coffee from South Sumatra to Malaysia via Boom Baru Port. South Sumatra is the largest coffee producer in Indonesia. The amount of coffee production reaches around 200.000 tons of coffee beans or 26% nationally. However, South Sumatra coffee is not so well known to others compared to other regions. For almost 15 years South Sumatra coffee has not been optimal in the form of exports. South Sumatra coffee has contributed greatly to economic growth.
There are a number of areas in South Sumatra that produce good robusta coffee, such as Empat Lawang, South Ogan Komering Ulu (OKU), Lahat, Pagar Alam, Muara Enim (Semendo), and Lahat. 90% of the coffee in the neighboring province comes from Semendo. South Sumatra had exported coffee but its ecosystem had not yet been formed. Therefore, OJK will form a financing ecosystem with banks and financial expansion for coffee farmers so that farmers do not go directly to loan sharks or to bosses who take advantage of the inability to access finance so that coffee is not productive. Apart from Malaysia, OJK is also negotiating with Australia, which will be achieved soon.
