BlueScope sees great opportunities in the development of these special steel products. The company has produced various types of steel needed for large projects, from high-rise buildings to transportation infrastructure and power plants. Not only that, investment in innovation and quality improvement continues to be made to face increasingly tight market competition. However, a major challenge arises from global protectionism. Countries such as the United States, India, and the European Union have implemented protectionist policies that limit steel imports, such as high tariffs on products from China. The United States, for example, has imposed a 25% tariff on imported steel products from China. Meanwhile, India has raised its steel import duties to 10-12%. This policy is reinforced by the implementation of trade remedies designed to reduce the impact of the entry of cheap steel products from abroad.
To face this challenge, Irfan assessed that Indonesia needs to increase supervision of the domestic steel market and implement similar policies, such as anti-dumping tariffs and higher import duties on imported steel. This step is expected to create healthier competition for local steel industry players.Another aspect of concern is the quality of imported steel. Irfan emphasized the importance of implementing stricter Indonesian National Standards (SNI) to ensure that only quality steel products can enter the domestic market. In addition, import policies must also consider the commodity balance and domestic steel production capacity. With this approach, Indonesia is expected to maintain the stability of the domestic steel market while continuing to encourage sustainable steel industry growth.
