Indonesia is set to control one-third of ASEAN's digital economy by 2030, with an estimated value of at least USD 360 billion. Minister of Communication and Informatics Meutya Hafid shared this vision during her scientific address at Brawijaya University, highlighting the digital economy as a key driver for Indonesia’s goal of achieving its "Golden Era" by 2045. She explained that Indonesia's digital economy is showing strong growth, with digital transactions projected to reach USD 90 billion by 2024, the largest in Southeast Asia. The e-commerce sector alone is growing at 11%, with transactions reaching USD 65 billion, fueled by innovations like video commerce.
Meutya emphasized the importance of digital infrastructure, talent development, and adaptive governance in strengthening the national digital economy. She outlined three key pillars of digital transformation: improving digital infrastructure with equitable access and faster internet, developing 9 million digital talents by 2030 through the Digital Talent Scholarship program, and creating a secure and sustainable digital ecosystem. The Minister also encouraged Brawijaya University’s academic community to collaborate with government and business sectors to build a robust digital ecosystem. While acknowledging global challenges like geopolitical instability and economic fragmentation, she expressed optimism that Indonesia could become a major player in Southeast Asia's digital economy.
