The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is committed to strengthening Indonesia's fisheries sector to support food security and boost export contributions. Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono revealed that Indonesia's total fisheries production currently reaches 13 million tons per year, with 7.8 million tons from capture fisheries and 5.6 million tons from aquaculture. Despite these significant numbers, he pointed out that Indonesia still lags behind countries like Vietnam, which has a production of 25 million tons from aquaculture and 3 million tons from capture fisheries. To address this gap, KKP aims to enhance aquaculture capacity, particularly in Central Java, which currently produces 847 thousand tons with an economic value of IDR 7.68 trillion.
Central Java has already made a significant contribution to fisheries exports, valued at IDR 5 trillion (USD 326.78 million), and holds great potential to further strengthen Indonesia's national export performance, which currently stands at USD 5.3 billion. Minister Trenggono expressed his hope that exports could eventually surpass Vietnam's USD 9.5 billion. To achieve this goal, KKP plans to revitalize shrimp ponds in the northern coastal regions of Java, including in Central Java, with an initial 20,000-hectare development slated for 2025. The Ministry also emphasized the importance of regional government and PLN's support to ensure energy availability for tilapia production aimed at both domestic and export markets. Additionally, KKP is promoting the "Gemar Makan Ikan" (Love Eating Fish) movement in Central Java, as fish consumption in the region is still relatively low at 15.6%, aiming to improve public health through better nutrition.
