Cashew nuts, known for their wide range of benefits, are increasingly popular in the global market. In addition to enhancing the flavor of dishes, cashew nuts are used as key ingredients in health and beauty products, making them a promising export commodity. As a leading producer, Indonesia continues to develop modern production methods to meet the growing international demand. Global export data from Volza reveals that cashew nut trade has reached 603 shipments from 113 exporters to 130 buyers across various countries. Indonesia dominates the global market with 544 shipments, followed by China (25 shipments) and the United States (11 shipments). Indonesia’s position as a key producer is supported by its ideal geographic conditions for cultivating cashews, with East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) being one of the largest producing regions in the country.
Some countries that are key export destinations for Indonesian cashew nuts include China, the United States, India, and Germany. The export potential for these markets remains significant, with large untapped opportunities. For instance, the potential export value to China is USD 290 million, while actual exports stand at just USD 11 million. Similarly, the U.S. market shows a potential export value of USD 113 million, but actual exports have only reached USD 61,000. This data highlights substantial opportunities in markets like the U.S. and Germany that are yet to be fully capitalized. To boost exports, Indonesia must focus on improving product quality to meet international standards, diversifying its offerings by processing cashews into high-value products like essential oils or skincare ingredients, and intensifying promotional efforts in key markets. With the increasing global demand for natural and organic products, Indonesia has a tremendous opportunity to position cashew nuts as a strategic commodity in global trade.
