Indonesia's Halal Product Exports Reach IDR 673.90 Trillion, Highlighting Global Trade Potential

Indonesia recorded halal product exports amounting to USD 41.42 billion (equivalent to IDR 673.90 trillion) from January to October 2024, with a trade surplus of USD 29.09 billion during the same period. This achievement was highlighted during a media briefing and talk show titled Indonesia’s Halal Product Exports held at the Ministry of Trade, Jakarta. According to Mardyana Listyowati, Director General of National Export Development, processed food dominated export performance at USD 33.61 billion, followed by Muslim apparel at USD 6.83 billion, pharmaceuticals at USD 612.1 million, and cosmetics at USD 362.83 million. Major export destinations include the United States, China, India, Pakistan, and Malaysia. The surplus in halal product trade has shown an upward trend, growing 10.86% annually between 2019–2023, with the highest record in 2022 at USD 47.7 billion. The government aims to enhance these exports further by introducing a halal HS code system in fashion, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics sectors.

To accelerate growth, the Indonesia Halal Export Incorporated task force has been established, focusing on market access, production incubation, Islamic financing, and mutual recognition of halal certifications. Priority markets include Malaysia, Turkey, the UAE, Thailand, and Saudi Arabia, with the Middle East offering strategic opportunities through the integration of halal products in Hajj and Umrah ecosystems. Global demand for halal products is projected to grow 7.6% annually, reaching USD 492 billion by 2027. Experts urge Indonesia to optimize its position within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and address challenges like international standards and regional regulations. With most halal products in OIC countries supplied by non-Muslim nations such as China, the U.S., and France, Indonesia is poised to strengthen its position as a reliable supplier of quality-assured halal goods.
