Indonesia Implements Container Scanners at Tanjung Priok Port to Boost Trade Efficiency

The Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC), under Indonesia’s Ministry of Finance, officially launched container scanning equipment for export-import goods at Jakarta’s Tanjung Priok Port in December 2024. This initiative aligns with the government’s goal to combat smuggling, enhance trade transparency, and improve port governance under Presidential Vision 7. The new scanners, regulated under Ministry of Finance Regulation No. 109/PMK.04/2020, enable rapid and precise inspections without opening containers. This innovation shortens processing times, curbs illegal goods entry, and strengthens border security. In 2024, Tanjung Priok Port handled 1,296,779 imported containers and 765,143 exported ones—marking a decline from 2023. However, customs violations surged to 2,142 cases, up from 1,005 in 2023, emphasizing the need for stricter controls.

Customs scanners provide notable benefits, such as safeguarding national interests by preventing illicit goods entry, reducing fraud in trade, and streamlining customs clearance. The average dwelling time in Indonesia, recorded at 2.71 days in November 2024, is expected to decrease with optimized scanning processes. The port now operates 10 scanners across five locations, including Jakarta International Container Terminal and New Priok Container Terminal-MTI, tailored to import-export needs. Customs Director-General Askolani emphasized that this development not only enhances trade efficiency but also supports Indonesia’s ambition to become a logistics hub in Southeast Asia. Importers and exporters are expected to benefit from faster, more reliable inspections, improved compliance, and reduced business costs, fostering a more competitive trade environment.
