Export Value of Fish from Riau Islands Reaches IDR 354 Billion

The Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Center (BKHIT) of Riau Islands (Kepri) reported that the region’s fish export value reached approximately IDR 354 billion annually. "For instance, in 2023, the volume of fresh fish exports was around 12,843 tons, equivalent to IDR 354 billion," said Dwi Sulistiyono, Acting Head of the Raja Haji Fisabilillah (RHF) Airport Service Unit in Tanjungpinang, on Saturday. Dwi noted that the average frequency of fresh fish exports from Kepri is about 4,200 shipments per year, with export destinations including Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Australia, and the United States. Singapore dominates 85 percent of the export market. The types of fish exported vary, including grouper, snapper, and the most dominant, mackerel.

In addition to fresh fish, Kepri also exports live fish, particularly to Hong Kong, including species such as the sunuk grouper, tiger grouper, cantang grouper, lobster, and napoleon fish, which have high market value. The frequency of live fish exports is around 60 to 70 shipments per year. "In 2023, live fish exports to Hong Kong totaled around 22,000 fish, with an economic value of about IDR 32 billion," Dwi added. He emphasized that all fish exported from Kepri are sourced from local fishermen, and exports are carried out through legally registered exporters. As per regulations, products intended for export must be reported to BKHIT Kepri for health checks before shipment. For live fish, reports must be submitted at least one day before departure to allow sufficient time for health testing. After confirming that the fish are disease-free, BKHIT issues a health certificate to ensure the fish meet the export destination's requirements. Dwi further mentioned that due to Kepri's geographical location, with 96 percent of its area being ocean, fish exports are expected to continue increasing, contributing to national foreign exchange earnings and supporting local economic growth. He added that BKHIT is working closely with various stakeholders, including business actors and customs authorities, to accelerate and improve export processes, ensuring that Kepri's fish exports are more effective, efficient, and sustainable.
