Minister of Investment and Downstreaming, as well as Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Rosan Roeslani, announced plans to establish an EU Desk to enhance cooperation between Indonesia and the European Union. This initiative followed a meeting with business leaders from the European Business Chambers of Commerce (EuroCham) in Indonesia, held at the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM Office in Jakarta on Monday. Rosan explained that the EU Desk would be set up alongside the existing China, Japan, and Korea Desks at the ministry to provide dedicated support for strengthening ties and collaboration between Indonesia and the European Union. This move reflects the growing importance of Europe as a consistent source of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Indonesia, with a total investment of 18.7 billion USD (IDR 296.3 trillion) from 52 countries between 2019 and the third quarter of 2024.
Over the past five years, European countries have remained one of the largest sources of FDI in Indonesia, with the Netherlands, France, and Germany being the top investors. Rosan emphasized that Indonesia continues to be an attractive investment destination for European nations due to its large economic potential and market size. "Indonesia represents around 41% of ASEAN's population and 36% of ASEAN's economy. This is supported by a growing economy and a stable democracy," he said. European Union Ambassador to Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam, Denis Chaibi, reaffirmed the EU’s commitment as a strategic partner, focusing on strengthening trade relations and addressing global challenges. Through initiatives like Global Gateway and the Just Energy Transition Partnership, the EU aims to collaborate with Indonesia to achieve its vision of a prosperous, green, and inclusive future by 2045.
