Indonesia has emerged as a leader in the game development industry in Southeast Asia, outpacing Thailand and Singapore, according to Deputy Minister of Creative Economy Irene Umar. Speaking at the opening of the Indonesia Games Festival (IGF) 2024 at ICE BSD, Tangerang, on September 6, 2024, Irene highlighted Indonesia's remarkable progress in this sector. She noted that the perception of gaming has shifted significantly over the years, evolving from a pastime often criticized to a profession that contributes to the nation’s economy and pride. Irene emphasized the economic potential of the gaming industry, where creativity is fostered and showcased. She also encouraged greater support for local game products, using the game Kidbash, IGF 2024’s official mascot, as an example of Indonesia's innovation in gaming.
Irene also underscored the importance of adopting new technologies, such as Web3 and blockchain gaming, to remain competitive globally. She expressed optimism about the future of Indonesia's gaming industry, thanks to government support and community involvement. "With the Ministry of Creative Economy and its initiatives, you no longer walk alone. Let’s work together to elevate Indonesia's gaming industry on the global stage," Irene stated. She called on the gaming community to actively contribute to the industry's growth and put Indonesia firmly on the international map as a hub for game development.
