Indonesia is actively working to accelerate its accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and enhance ASEAN’s economic integration, aiming to drive inclusive and sustainable economic growth. As highlighted by the Minister of National Development Planning (Bappenas), Suharso Monoarfa, this initiative aligns with Indonesia’s broader goals of boosting global competitiveness while ensuring that economic benefits are shared equitably across all segments of society. At the 2023 ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Forum, Minister Suharso emphasized that accelerating economic integration within ASEAN, alongside strengthening cooperation with external partners like the OECD, is critical in addressing global economic challenges. By engaging in these frameworks, Indonesia aims to contribute to multilateral cooperation and help mitigate global disruptions such as trade tensions, climate change, and supply chain issues.
The OECD accession is seen as an important opportunity for Indonesia to improve its economic governance, adopt international best practices, and receive technical assistance that will strengthen its policymaking processes. Membership would provide Indonesia with the resources needed to enhance its digital economy, trade policies, and sustainability efforts. In addition, Indonesia’s commitment to ASEAN economic integration is crucial for the region’s resilience in the face of global uncertainties. Through initiatives like the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), Indonesia is working to reduce trade barriers, promote investment, and enhance mobility within the region. This deepened cooperation will ultimately foster economic growth, improve regional competitiveness, and contribute to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through these efforts, Indonesia aims not only to strengthen its own economy but also to contribute to a more stable, prosperous, and sustainable global economy.
