Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, announced that the nation's digital economy is projected to reach a value of USD 120 billion in 2025, up from the current USD 90 billion. By 2030, this figure is anticipated to surge to USD 400 billion. Speaking at the 2024 Kadin National Leadership Meeting on December 2, Airlangga emphasized Indonesia’s leadership in digital economy development in Asia and its pivotal role in ASEAN's Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA). He noted that ASEAN is the only regional bloc globally with an advanced digital economy framework, surpassing similar initiatives in the EU, NAFTA, and OECD regions. Airlangga also highlighted that OECD countries are keen to learn from ASEAN’s approach to digital economy cooperation.
Airlangga further outlined that under the DEFA initiative, ASEAN’s digital economy could reach USD 2 trillion by 2030, doubling its estimated business-as-usual projection of USD 1 trillion. Indonesia alone is expected to contribute USD 600-800 billion. With over 2,400 startups, two decacorns (valued above USD 10 billion), and more than 10 unicorns (valued above USD 1 billion), Airlangga expressed confidence in Indonesia's potential to lead ASEAN's digital economy. He underlined the importance of leveraging the digital sector to ensure a level playing field and accelerate economic growth compared to conventional economic approaches.
