Government to Simplify Regulations to Boost Renewable Energy Investment

The Minister of Investment and Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, has stated that the government aims to increase investment in the renewable energy (EBT) sector by two to three times in the coming years. This goal is part of Indonesia's broader strategy to accelerate the transition to clean energy. To attract more investors, Roeslani emphasized that the government will focus on simplifying regulations and aligning policies between the central and regional governments, aiming to make the permitting process more efficient and investor-friendly. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration between institutions to achieve this objective.

In a meeting at the Indonesia-UK Climate and Green Finance event at the London Stock Exchange, Roeslani further stressed that downstreaming is key to sustainable energy transition and that international financial institutions and carbon markets must be involved to achieve these goals. He invited UK investors to explore renewable energy opportunities in Indonesia, highlighting the country’s abundant renewable resources, including the world’s largest geothermal reserves, especially on Java Island. Indonesia has a renewable energy potential of around 3,700 gigawatts from sources like solar, tidal, hydro, and geothermal, but currently utilizes less than 1% of this potential. Roeslani also mentioned the country’s significant carbon storage capacity of 700 gigatons, and noted Indonesia’s commitment to reaching Net Zero Emissions by 2060, with a collaborative effort from various parties to increase the likelihood of achieving this target ahead of schedule.
