In October 2024, Italian steel production saw a notable increase of 9% compared to the previous month, reaching 1.96 million tons, which also represented a 2.2% rise from the same period in 2023. According to data from the Italian Federation of Steelworkers (Federacciai), the production of long products remained stable at 1.1 million tons, marking a 0.6% increase year-on-year. However, flat products experienced a decline of 12.3% year-on-year, with output reaching 794 thousand tons, though this was up 5.2% from the previous month.
Looking at the year-to-date data for January-October 2024, Italian steelmakers reduced production by 4.7% compared to 2023, totaling 17 million tons. The production of long products showed a slight increase of 0.5% year-on-year, amounting to 9.9 million tons, while flat products saw a more significant decline of 10.5%, totaling 7.2 million tons. In 2023, steel production fell by 2.5% compared to 2022, driven by global demand slowdown and high energy costs, with long products production declining by 2.9% and flat products remaining nearly unchanged. Overall, the EU produced 126.3 million tons of steel in 2023, a 7.4% decrease from the previous year, although December saw a 2.7% increase in production.
