The batik industry plays a crucial role in preserving Indonesia's culture while contributing significantly to the national economy. According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), from January to September 2024, batik exports contributed USD 11.52 million to national exports. However, the industry has faced challenges in the last two years due to weakened demand in the export market. In 2023, batik exports saw a 30% decline compared to 2022, and in the second quarter of 2024, there was a 33.72% decrease in exports compared to the same period in 2023. Despite these challenges, the Ministry of Industry remains optimistic about the batik industry's potential, particularly in the domestic market. The growing trend of young people incorporating batik into their daily wear presents opportunities, though concerns remain regarding the influx of cheaper batik designs.
To support the development of the batik industry, the Ministry of Industry has implemented several programs, such as the Batikmark certification, run by the Industrial Standardization and Services Center (BBSPJI) for Crafts and Batik. This certification ensures the quality and authenticity of batik products, which is crucial in preserving cultural heritage amidst technological advancements. Additionally, the Ministry is working on halal certification for batik products to ensure consumers can confidently use batik during religious practices. To expand the batik market, efforts include promoting batik uniforms, such as those for KORPRI and civil servants in various regions. The Ministry is also pushing for the use of batik in hajj uniforms, aiming to boost local batik production and empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the industry. Director General of Small and Medium Industry, Reni Yanita, emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to prioritize domestic industry interests, strengthen the supply chain, and protect the local batik industry.
