Becoming a Superstar, LPEI Encourages Growth in Moringa Superfood Exports

From January to September 2024, the value of powdered vegetable exports saw a significant increase of 90.74%, reaching USD 13.75 million, up from USD 7.21 million during the same period last year. The volume of exports also grew by 169.41%, from 1,610 tons to 4,350 tons. A large portion of these exports consisted of vegetable blends, including moringa powder. The highest cumulative export value increases were seen in markets such as China (up USD 7.39 million), Thailand (up USD 110.54 thousand), Saudi Arabia (up USD 71.01 thousand), Japan (up USD 46.09 thousand), and Malaysia (up USD 35.08 thousand). This strong market demand for powdered vegetable products, including moringa-based products, highlights the bright prospects for these exports. In response to this demand, the Indonesia Export Financing Agency (LPEI) has been promoting the development of moringa leaf export potential through initiatives such as the Coaching Program for New Exporters (CPNE) and Desa Devisa.

One successful example of LPEI's support is PT Keloria Moringa Jaya, an alumni of the CPNE program, which has successfully expanded its moringa product exports. Moringa, known for its health benefits as a superfood, has made inroads into international markets, thanks to intensive coaching and guidance from LPEI. The CPNE program focuses on equipping companies with essential export skills, understanding global market regulations, and developing effective marketing strategies. Fachrul Rozi Lubis, owner of PT Keloria Moringa Jaya, expressed that LPEI's training was invaluable, covering everything from finding buyers and determining product HS codes to calculating export costs and creating effective company profiles and e-catalogs for international markets. The company’s first export was moringa powder, which was shipped to Australia in early 2021, starting with a 20 kg shipment. Now, PT Keloria Moringa Jaya regularly ships up to 300 kg per order, with shipments occurring one to three times a month, generating around USD 5,400 in monthly export revenue. Currently, over 75% of the company’s sales come from international markets, with the remaining 25% targeted at the domestic market. Moringa powder is used abroad as an ingredient in herbal drinks and cooking spices.
