Indonesia's Export Performance Improves, Non-Oil and Gas Sector Becomes the Main Driver

In October 2024, Indonesia achieved a significant export performance, reaching a total export value of USD 24.41 billion, reflecting a 10.69% increase compared to September 2024. Compared to October 2023, exports grew by 10.25%. Acting Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, reported that non-oil and gas exports in October 2024 totaled USD 23.07 billion, a 10.35% increase from September and an 11.04% rise from the same period last year. The top non-oil and gas export commodities showed significant growth, with the export of animal and vegetable fats and oils seeing the highest increase, rising by USD 1.046 billion or 52.67%. However, exports of precious metals and jewelry/diamonds declined by USD 102 million, or 14.46%. In terms of sectors, manufacturing exports grew by 3.75%, while agricultural, forestry, and fishery exports saw a notable increase of 23.78%. On the other hand, mining exports experienced a decline of 8.65%, possibly due to global commodity price fluctuations and reduced demand for certain mining products.

Indonesia's major export destinations in October 2024 were China, receiving US$5.66 billion, the United States at USD 2.34 billion, and India at USD 2.02 billion. These three countries together accounted for almost 44% of Indonesia's total non-oil and gas exports. Additionally, exports to ASEAN countries reached US$4.32 billion, and exports to the European Union totaled USD 1.59 billion. Regionally, the largest exporters within Indonesia were West Java, contributing USD 31.52 billion (14.51% of total exports), followed by East Java with USD 21.44 billion (9.87%), and East Kalimantan at USD 20.86 billion (9.60%). Cumulatively, Indonesia's total exports from January to October 2024 reached USD 217.24 billion, up 1.33% from the same period in 2023, with non-oil and gas exports totaling USD 204.21 billion, a 1.48% increase. This growth signals a positive outlook for Indonesia's trade prospects despite challenges such as commodity price fluctuations and geopolitical uncertainties.
