Expanding Indonesia-China Halal Food Production

During President Prabowo Subianto's recent visit to Beijing (8-10 November 2024), Indonesia and China signed key agreements to strengthen food security, including collaborations in the halal food sector. This cooperation was met with a food product exhibition and business meetings held in Jakarta from 11-15 November 2024, hosted by the Indonesia-China Institute (LIT) and led by Ambassador Sudrajat. The event brought together 175 food companies from both countries, with seminars, business meetings, and visits to industrial zones and ports in Greater Jakarta and West Java. In a seminar on 11 November 2024 at Hotel Mulia, officials from the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Food and Drug Authority (BPOM), and Halal Certification Agency presented insights to hundreds of industry stakeholders.

In 2023, Indonesia’s food export value reached USD 46 billion, representing 34% of its GDP. With the global halal food market valued at USD 2.6 trillion, Indonesia’s share accounts for only 2%, signaling vast growth potential if aligned with China's larger business scale. Ambassador Sudrajat highlighted Indonesia’s advantage in year-round production, contrasting with other countries’ seasonal limitations. With the global halal food market expected to reach USD 4.5 trillion by 2030, both nations aim to leverage Indonesia’s Muslim-majority status and China’s advanced funding and technology to expand exports to the Middle East and OIC countries.
